Something a little different for this blog entry.,a shoot with illusion act High Jinx. Comprised of Michael and Tamsyn.
I've known Michael for quite a while and this is the second set of publicty stills Ive done for his act,this time with new assistant Tamsyn. You-dear reader-may have seen them on ITV show Penn and Teller "Fool Us", I did and was suprised as I didnt knnow they were going to be on!
Most magicians PR shots are cheesy and boring ,so I try to inject some creativity into High Jinx's shoot. This was shot without flash to get the shadow effect.

I make them perform their acts almost,in the lock up where they store their props.Makes things less static.

The monster eyes were a little sensitive to my lights so we had to work quick on this shot ;)

Fire shots are always tricky, especially when Michael has to wait for photographer to neatly frame a shot whilst his tongue burns! Thanks Michael lol.

So hopefully when they are headlining Las Vegas they'll hire me to be their in house photog! Until then they

Manchester riots

The spate of riots in cities throughout UK reached Manchester in August. With looting and expensive damage caused.For the media it was good photo opportunities for a press photographer but also risky with troublecausers obviously wanting to avoid being photographed, so having a camera around one's neck was risky!
Walking around the City Centre it was both sad and strange,seeing damaged shops and people wandering about with arms full of goods seemingly careless. Whilst general public tried to go about their lives normally.

World Naked Bike Ride

A manchester park on a hot day, people bound to be wearing very little,right? Well how about completely naked?

Mingling with students mainly soaking up sun a group of people all shapes and ages stripped nude to promote alternative methods of transport! Quite an eye opener even for a photographer! Bizarrely no-one seemed that bothered, clothed or un. More men than women were in attendance, and with various slogans painted on themselves.I odubt it was most comfortable way to ride a bike!!

Frankenstein's Wedding

A freezing cold night outdoors at a ancient gothic Abbey in Leeds, BBC Three were recreating Mary Shelley's famous works. Ex Eastender's actress Lacey Turner and Fast Show comic Mark Williams were teh recognisable faces amongst the strong cast.

From a photography point of view it was difficult.low light ,due to TV cameras everywhere I was restricted in where to stand! From an artistic point of view it was rather interesting, I have never seen a play/theatrical event, so an outdoors one was an experience.

Pictured is Andrew Gower(Victor Frankenstein)with the dead bride Elizabeth on the floor. With musical interludes,I quite liked the version of Athletes' "Wires" as Victor killed his female Monster, a sombre poetic serenade.I have no idea of his prior work but he posseses a reasonable singing voice.A lot of the scenes were hidden from audience view or pre-recorded so being there didnt have as much atmosphere. But the appearance of the Supermoon above the abbey was no coincidence I was told. The last third was most entertaining as the murder ,mystery unfolded and the monster arrived to get his revenge.

As a free event for 10,000 people it was a resounding success, watching the TV show later -back in the warmth-it worked better. I think Lacy Turner will find it easy to shake off soap character stigma on this evidence.

What does Kate Middleton see in helicopter pilot heir to the throne William?

To paraphrase Mrs Merton from years ago. The slightly balding heir to the throne and future King Wills(Copyright UK population)was confident enough that the marriage was still on, so he stepped out in public for first time with the lovely Kate Middleton. The occasion? Naming a lifeboat! That old chestnut! Not quite the QE2 but you cant jump the water based vehicle queue just because your Mum died.
Taking a day off from whatever there is to do in Angelsey, the locals gathered to get a glimpse (literally)of Wills and bit of skirt Kate.

What is it about tehse Royal visists that make locals act odd? The local council cleaned the streets and repainted road signs, forgetting William lives in the area and being a helicopter pilot has likely seen Angelsey at its worst already!

Old people gave Kate flowers and a picture of William and one old timer tried his luck for a kiss before Secret Service shot him dead(sadly that's not true). Sensibly wearing gloves,skin to skin contact with Royal "bits of fluff" is forbidden.So everyone knew she ws going to be a Princess of Wales she wore soem hair accessory with the Prince of Wales emblem on it. Unconfirmed reports say her knickers were Union Jack design.

Seriously the couple did well on the PR stakes,shaking hands ,meeting public freely, Kate was all smiles and seemed quite personable, so maybe with a hint of Diana's legacy going on. What will happen after their marriage when they are both living in Angelsey, can't imagine them popping into Waitrose on a regular basis. From a photographer side,it was interesting as I've never photographed a Royal before, and likely seen most Press in one place ever too.Shooting from a step ladder meant no eye contact with the couple, but it was an experience and unless a wedding invite is in the post it's likely a long while before I see them again.See more shots Press and PR Photography

Brit Awards fiasco

Well what was all that about?! ITV Brit Awards got took over by MTV Base and no-one noticed. No award for most ridiculous name,so Plan B,Tinie Tempah, Cee Lo Green went home empty handed for that; Professor Green was most probably left in the dining room with the rope and lead pipe trying to fashion a tourniquet.
The annual lovefest masquerading as representing UK music was in full swing,but you could easily predict the iwnners as they were ones in audience. Justin Bieber sat like a choirboy in a brothel and looking like a 9 year old dressed by his Mum for a school trip, he wasn't just flown half way around the world just to be at the brunt of one of James Corden's ever decreasing jokes; no he won Best Breakthrough Artist! When his voice breaks through what then? Is his Mother a Stepford Wife 'cos he looks freaky.Will Young's eyes were on stalks when the two of them presented an award.
A beacon of talent was Adele just her a spotlight and some glitter singing "Someone Like You" inspiring and emotional,Cheryl Cole must have been pulling her "soft and shiny" hair out to have half Adele's talent. The jokes didnt come thick and fast as Cordon's dire presenting continued completely losing Mark Ronson with a comment about "Mark" -who we'd seen was Bieber's travel chaperone- it was neither ironic nor topical, just dumb.
The organiser of the Brits gave the audience ample time to get refreshments and go to the toilet as Mumford and Sons took to the stage, you'd like to think the silence was awestruck punters, but sadly life isnt fair.Looking like extras from "Deliverance" folllowing Bieber, Rihanna and Take That probably isnt the place for Mumford and Sons.
Arcade Fire managed to be funnier in their acceptance speech in 30 secs than Corden managed all night, let them host next year, their performance was suitably energetic(two drummers!).Rihanna did a medley of hits from her most recent album and managed to no doubt upset faint hearted viewers by stripping off her clothes. Although ITV probably learned a lesson from her appearance on X Factor as she was wearing a body stocking tonight.
Cheryl Cole got her obligatory appearance, heaven forbid she can stay off TV for a whole month, seemingly practicing some strange way of talking very-slowly-indeed, she didnt win anything thankfully so she will have to get malaria again in time for next year.
Kylie pulled out this year due to illness which I assume threw a spanner in the works for the finale,as we were "treated" to Paloma Faith and OddJob from Goldfinger doing a duet,hardly superstar material.
Dull and predictable as ever The Brits stays the same,still it left a nation with one word on it's lips after seeing Laura Marling win an award "Who?".

David Beckham back at Man Utd

David Beckham was back in Manchester for the passionate derby match with Man City. Best photographs were taklen after the game when he did a walkabout with fans who were herded behind barriers outside, once he had put the kids in the car of course! Here is Becks with Cruz his youngest son.

Last tim I got as close to Beckham like in photo below was in a service station in West Yorkshire, he took exception to being photographed and a tussle ensued from which he broke my camera's flashgun. He apologised and paid for damage, this was over 10 years ago so I guess he didnt remember me!! Notice all the people in back of the shot craning to see him,including people at an upstairs window! Such is the attraction of Beckham Nice that he took time out for fans time has mellowed him.

Out with the old

A blog post featuring a few of my favourite press photographs from 2010,various subjects. It was origianlly intended to be 12 photos,one a month but I didnt have 12 that stood out. In no particular order we begin with winning jockey at Grand National race,sport is not soemthign I photograph ,I was at Aintree race for the celebrities that attend. The shot hopefully shows the enthusiasm of the winner crossing finish post.

Next is a image you aren't likely to see again for a long time, an empty airport in daylight! The ash crisis in Summer,a cloud of ash shut airspace over UK for a record number of days. Seeming like a scene from an apocalypse film an eerie calm at Manchester Airport. More images at Press Photography website

This next photograph was taken outside a BNP meeting near Oldham,a handful of protesters gathered outside with banners. This particular photo I like due to contrast between old man and younger woman ,different generations yet same views. Bonus that they both wore glasses!

Another Summer picture,although it certainly doesnt like it! I waited outside Emmerdale TV studios for cast to leave to get on a coach, right at the moment they appeared a thunderstorm started!! I was shooting blind and this was the picture that got used in a few magazines. Pictured are Sophie Powles and Emma Atkins.

Britain's Got Talent competion goes on tour after the winner is found and this photo shows a trapeze style act called Spellbound at the Manchester show.One of the group is caught midair in this shot.

Photocalls for new books with the authorare often dull affairs,so is Ryan Giggs but as we did the shoot on the pitch of Old Trafford I think this picture came out well, even though I cropped his feet off the shot lol.

It's Xmas.

End of the photography year really, with Christmas and New Year nothing much happens in holiday season for commercial and press photography.Shortly I will be listing at top ten photographs of the year but for now enjoy some snow landscapes. Last couple of years winter is the only time I have photographed landscapes,something about the snow that makes me want to find cool places to shoot. I don't have a landscape photography website so hope you enjoy the three posted here.
First is Heckmondwike's Xmas lights,my old home town, a grim place in daylight,this makes it look suprisingly good.

Fountains Abbey North Yorkshire,taken during the first winter spell at end of November.

Third and final shot is over looking Laithes Reservoir on outskirts of Haworth, a favourite place of mine for Xmassy shots.Implements the rule of thirds nicely too!

Shakira started her UK tour in Manchester Tuesday 14th December. I was there to photograph it South American sexy singer looked happy gyrating her hips to avrious latin pop dance numbers. Including her big hit "Whenever wherever", backed by musicians from her home land her set was a mixture of folk/latin America and pop with acoustic instruments,skin drums and harmonica! A cover of Metallica's Nothing Else Matters was performed in latino style at the end of the catwalk within touching distance of her fans.Her unique singing voice suits these ballad moments of which there were a few. But her finesse is her dancing, all hips and belly,twisting to the beats.

Snow joke.

Recent heavy snow in UK provided many press photography opportunities, with towns cut off and roads unpassable.
Whilst it makes for good photo opportunites it is also difficult to get to places with bad snow, I travelled to Sheffield and Barnsley area looking for cool shots,didnt get stuck once!. Wayne Rooney shipped out?

Wayen Rooney was filming his Street Striker programme last week in Manchester, next to Manchester canal. Despite TV company's best efforts to stop press photographers,we managed to get some good photos from a public cafe at water's edge! They do hate that when they cannot legally move you.
Wayne was kicking balls from a moving barge -the idea being to land them in a barge opposite,but it wasn't Wayne's day as he missed everyone. Sadly for us snappers he didnt fall in either, but I got a back page picture on Daily Star Friday which was a first for me,so all is good.
With rumours circualting he is to leave Manchester United ,maybe United have missed the boat too!

EDL Protest and Confederates lose again!

The much taunted EDL protest in Braford last weekend didnt really take off, much to relief of Bradford community. The police were expecting trouble and were out in force(no pun intended)officers mounted,in riot gear and Nuclear Biological Chemical attack barricades(what were the EDL bringing the missing Iraq WMD's?).At one stage it seemed there was more media than protestors,with press everywhere on the ground and perched on the hotel veranda opposite!
A few smoke bombs and thrown bottles was as hairy as it got,so the police thought they wpould harass photographers instead.One young lad was thrown to the ground G20 style!! Being stuck against a wall next to a huge looking police horse as a protestor decided it was a good idea to thump it was a little worrying.Not as exciting for pictures as I'd hoped but a few are shown.

Confederates lose again!

Sunday and Monday in Sheffield Norfolk Park wasa fayre of sorts, with re-enactments of America Civil war.Professional renancters dress the part and complete with cannon and rifle fire,plenty of smoke a famous battle was re-run. Given the close proximity of each army to each other ,it seemed to take a while for anyone to get shot! All posturing and shouting, a lot like the EDL protest! Good fun and free to watch.

That will set google ablaze I don't think! For probably the one and only time I'm linking a photo I didn't take.But because it is just the perfect funny press/celeb pic I thought it worth blogging. Also Facebook apparently banned it!

I updated the terrace chant with two extra 9's for obvious reason's! Maybe FT is signing for the Police team? Or possibly the Officer is filling in a betting slip "Torres to join Chelsea" and knows something we don't? Who knows?!
Well apparently he is being "distressed" and "harrassed" according to his solicitor. Actually he was complaining about the horrible photographer after ringing police to me! Shock horror! A rich footballer complaining who'd have thought it?

Apparently a new law was introduced into UK on Monday,whereby celebs/famous people can't be photographed on a public street, an "invasion of privacy" seemingly.Or maybe it's Liverpool FC's dictatorship towards freelance photographers?!
I would think a multi million pound footballer,returning from winning the world cup; amidst transfer speculation and with a brand new Aston Martin DB something or other would be public interest lol!
Maybe it's me but doesn't releasing an autobiography say you want publicity and everyone to be interested in your life!!
Still it's not everyday you get to have a verbal sparring about law with a top solicitor(Schillings).
Well 3 papers may well have used the folowing pics and next day would be forgotten.Now I release them to the web for all to use as they wish forever.

Update!!

Liverpool FC have been complaining via their solicitors yet again! This time they want this blog removing! It contains allegations and deformation apparently! So here's a competition for readers of this blog. First person to email with the deformatory allegations contained in this article wins a prize. Purely because they don't exist! Liverpool FC seem to have some kind of vendetta against freelance photographers, solicitors letters ,harassing photographers at the training ground etc. Maybe they would find it more productive to concentrate on their team actually winning something this year! Katie Price/Jordan wins Pullitzer prize....

...And thus I awoke in a sweat from a nightmare! Apologies to my English teacher for starting a sentence with "and".
Katie Price launches yet another book! How does she find the time to come up with ideas to give to her ghost writer?! In between weddings,tanning sessions and botox treatment! She is on a week long UK book tour(of coastal towns!!),having started in London(sea?) and hit Blackpool(one out of two) I went along to the Doncaster signing(being careful not to fall in the sea),she made her grand entrance after 30 minute wait in the glamorous attire of a grey tracksuit! Photographers were given a minute of time and herded out! Thanks Katie you really know how to stage a photo op!

These so called celebs start a publicity tour in London wearing almost nothing, then us fame starved togs up North get a dingy tracksuit! Marvellous, maybe the climate outside of London is too much for them.

Radio Aire's annual pop gig was at the weekend, 70,000 free tickets!! Take note BRMB this is how you organise a free event without chaos!
After the has beens and wish they were agains (Lee Ryan Dane Bowers Damage etc)were some decent acts.I spent most of my time avoiding the organiser and other snappers as I was using a pseudonym and my cover was wafer thin! Leeds Council banned me from their events 5 years ago for the sin of going against artists' wishes! Can you class Rachel Stevens as an artist?
Alesha Dixon and gorgeous Pixie Lott went down well as did The Saturdays-although after seeing Una topless recently in the papers my concentration drifted. Yes some of them needed to learn how to look happy and Frankie needs a good dinner down her,but a good little pop group all the same. I cringed watching Beverley Knight from backstage(woo)I imagine 70,000 fans going "Who?" at least had they have done ,the silence for her would have been broken.

Bad pun,recently in Manchester was the last auditions for upcoming series of X Factor. With Cheryl Cole laid up with a slice of lettuce for company, it fell to Nicole Scherzinger, singer and racing driver wag, to be the extra judge. Paps were faling over themselves to get pics,on a hot sunny day it was good condtions for hanging around watching filming.The appearance of a Corrie actor(Andy Whyment)"auditioning" as part of the soap was bizarre. A TV show within a TV show?!

Coming soon to a TV screen near you,"Kirky" on X Factor, cant be any worse than Diana Vickers!

Then Monday my mundane trip to the Newsagents was brightened by 4 pics in 3 papers of a model I photographed in a fountain in Sheffield a few weeks ago. I did the shoot with sending them to papers in mind. All it needed was a hot day. Voila Sunday was billed as hottest day of the year!!

Express,Star and Mirror all used the same pic. This is from Daily Mirror. The small pic of two girls in bikinis is also mine from a previous shoot.

Roy and Hayley come a cropper?

Filming took place at Heaton hall,Heaton Park Manchester Friday for the wedding of Roy and Hayley Cropper. On a hot sunny day it was interesting to watch characters you see on TV every week. As a photographer they are merely actors to me not celebroties, but some park walkers thrust their babies into cast members faces for a photograph. Why a 2 year old child would wish to be photographed with Roy Cropper is a mystery.

Corrie "lesbians " actresses Sacha Parkinson and Brooke Vincent had a fit of giggles which made for animated pictures,one of which I have included on the blog. Asked Brooke Vincent to pose with an England flag,as newspapers will be wanting such images come Sunday,sadly diva tendencies took over and she wouldn't oblige."Not allowed to" is the offical response, translated into Press speak means "I'll do it for cash"

Fashion event in Leeds

Are you a celeb? Want a load of free stuff? Well Alea Casino in Leeds was just the place Thursday,with Fashion TV hosting some kind of event. No idea what, but the venue at Alea was very posh and cool. As usual at these events the guest list promises many celebs(soap stars)from all soaps,names that photographers like to see on the list. Basically young pretty girls form Soaps.

As it was Ememrdale were main attendees,with someone from Galaxy FM bringing up the rear. Here is a picture of the gorgeous Sophie Powles who was carrying a Kristin Stewart (Twilight) look.Sultry!

Other cast included Suzanne Shaw,Lucy Pargeter,Nick Miles,Nicola Wheeler,Sian Reese Williams Natalie Robb and Kelsey Beth Crossley(below) So some pretty girls were in attendance. Apparently they all enjoyed themselves in the gifting room, which is a trendy word for freebies.

Britain's Got Talent

Haven't blogged for two years so hope to be more frequent.Ironically my last blog was on this same subject!

The Arena tour of the contestants from the recent show started Saturday 19th June in Manchester and I went along to photograph it. Now usually the media has some access to these events; but for this "offical "press were only allowed first act strangely. So I bought a ticket and smuggled in my camera.

Watching a show that has every promise of being dull doesn't bode well for a Saturday evening. i was proved wrong,in that it was quite entertaining. Good old variety, singers, impressionists and a perma tanned dance group in Spelbound(pictured).

Only let down was host Paddy McGuiness(TV's Max and Paddy)who being a former half of a Peter Kay duo must feel hard done by considering Peter has sold out numerous nights at this same Arena just on his own! He simply isn't funny, although I did smile at his leotard wearing stint with a Spelbound dancer. Britains Got Talent Images

Apparently a leader of Al Qaeda and preached hate and incited terrorism via the net! Not just sending spam emails from the estate of Dr.Madu Frank,offering a share of millions.
Anyway he was found out and jailed but suprise suprise a judge(unlikely not resembling Cilla Black)released him on bail, stating there were no grounds ot keep him! Of course not.He hadn't unpaid council tax,or assaulted a burglar trying to rob him, no merely incited muslims to terrorize.
The Jordanians don't get him back(he is wanted on terror charges there too)so he is put under house arrest.Given a tag to wear-street cred with the cider drinking "yoof"- of today though,and must remain indoors for 22 hours a day.
Obviously MI5 are keeping tabs on him,and he unlike his tagged brethren cannot use his mobile phone or the internet.His Al Quada MSN buddies must be LOL-ing at these conditions.
But just when the war on terror(Copyright George Bush 2001)gets ever messier,a glorious chance to get one up on the Jihads is missed.Abu Qutada is forbidden from contacting Osma Bin Laden!!
Even in a cave in the depths of Afghanistan,this news must surely have raised a chuckle.No more late night texting,and that online multiplayer session of Gears of War is going to have to wait!

So Cowell's Got Cash finishes another series! A 14 year old boy who looks like someone plugged him in to the mains(hairstyle and dance actions)wins! Hmm..nothing to do with his cute appeal to 14 year old girls I suppose or his ever so sad life-told in slow motion and black and white with obligatory stirring music.

Still what were the chances of two Sikhs(Signature)meeting the Queen had they won? A black man winning something in Britain? Perish the thought. Ok so someone put the idea into Andy Abraham's head when he entered Eurovision; but even he must have known being British was enough to lose the contest.

So George Sampson meets the Queen and then..? What longevity of a career does spinning on your head get you?

To Blog or not to Blog that is the question.

I have literally no idea what a blog is supposed to do.A bit like Myspace except more lonely?!
